CBS shut down a hit sitcom for the rest of the season.
"I'm tired of pretending I'm not special. I'm tired of pretending like I'm not bitchin' it total rockstar from Mars. And uh, people can't figure me out. They can't process me. I don't expect them to. You can't process me with a normal brain," said Charlie Sheen on NBC's Today Show.
Charlie Sheen says he has cured himself of addiction.
"I - I - I close my eyes and-- and-- and made it so, with the power of my mind. Had to unload-- 22 years of fiction, and-- just decided that I don't believe that anymore, and I know my own truth, and I just-- that's-- what I stand on right now."
"A lot of this is symptoms of someone we see in an active addiction. That they are sick and suffering," said Teresa Kessler, Program Manager for the Women and Children's Program at Hope House.
"There's an element of denial as far as the impact of it. The ability to cure oneself. The whole disregard for a 75 year tradition of self-help through AA and NA."
Experts say addiction is a disease, like cancer and that it can be treated.
"We find that most people need some assistance," said Kevin Connally, Executive Director of Hope House. "And if people need the type of assistance that we can provide, they are encouraged to reach out to Hope House or other agencies such as Hope House that are in the Capital District."
Sheen has done a series of high-profile interviews.
"Very sad. Very sad. Especially for those of us that are in the field and who see this every day. And go through these experiences with people. I think the thing that we keep in mind as professionals is that there's hope in recovery," said Kessler.
Hope House is one of the leading substance abuse treatment organizations in the area.
